Anything that slithers should immediately be suspect

Yesterday’s Yuma Sun story reported that efforts to re-populate desert bighorn sheep in our area have been somewhat successful; the numbers are growing, albeit slowly.

In the Florida Everglades it’s an overpopulation that’s worrying officials. Burmese Pythons, released into the wild when owners no longer wanted them or as a result of Hurricane Andrew, are taking over the Everglades environment. A public hunt for pythons is now under way, with 1,000 permits issued to hunters, but only 21 have been killed.

The snakes are devastating the native rabbit, fox, raccoons, opossum and other small wildlife populations. Growing up to 20 feet long, the snakes are even feasting on bobcats.

I hate snakes, small or large. Anything that slithers should immediately be suspect, and I’d like to be as far away as possible.

I’d never see a 20-ft. python because I’d be long gone before I ever saw the end of that snake. In fact, my skin is crawling right now…..
