Salvation Army offers faith along with family aid

The Salvation Army in Yuma County helps countless members of the community through its social outreach services, but what many Yumans may not know, the organization can also help provide faith and a relationship with Jesus Christ.

While The Salvation Army is not one particular denomination of Christianity, Capt. Jonathan Harvey said the organization could be described as similar to the Nazarene Church. The Salvation Army's ministry has been in Yuma for 60 years, offering church services in both English and Spanish.

The Salvation Army, an international organization, began in 1865 when a minister in London left traditional pulpit preaching and began taking his message into the streets, ministering to the poor and homeless.

"His original aim was to send converts to established churches of the day but soon he realized that the poor did not feel comfortable or welcome in the pews of most of the churches and chapels of Victorian England," according to historians with Salvation Army International Headquarters. "Regular churchgoers were appalled when these shabbily dressed, unwashed people came to join them in worship."

Booth set up a tent inside a graveyard and "his services became an instant success. His renown as a religious leader spread throughout London, and he attracted followers who were dedicated to fight for the souls of men and women."

Whether it's helping make sure a family stays in its home and not get evicted or helping a family gather around a table and learn how to grow together, Harvey said the focus is on the family.

"Our goal is to enrich family life." And, he said, they try to make it fun.

"We try to make our services lively and enthusiastic. There's enough junk out in the world without coming to church and being bored. I feel that my job as a pastor is to bring the Bible to life in today's world, to make it real in today's world."

It's the same message at the Hispanic ministry, he said, which is led by Hilda Hamilton. Hamilton, who's been with The Salvation Army for 24 years, is in her second year leading the local Hispanic congregation. She said she finds inspiration for her sermons through prayer and meditation for God's wisdom.

The majority of the congregation is either seasonal workers or have lost their jobs.

Hamilton said she helps encourage the congregation through crisis, "By loving them and showing Christ's love."

Harvey said Hamilton does a great job of combining The Salvation Army's spiritual support and physical support -  "which is kind of walking the walk and not just talking the talk," he said.

The English service is at 11 a.m. Sundays at 1100 S. 13th Ave. The Spanish service is at 5 p.m. Sundays at 475 W. 13th St.

The Salvation Army also provides family services such as food boxes; help with utilities, rent or mortgage; and gas vouchers. It also runs a sizable thrift store. The organization also provides youth activities that build character with a moral component.
