AWC has job fair

  The Arizona Western College Career Development Department is holding a job fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday on the AWC main campus. The event is open to the public as a free networking resource for those looking for a job or a new career path.

  More than 50 employers will be on hand marketing jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities for local and federal government entities, the military, law enforcement, retail, education, media and non-profits.

  Job hopefuls should bring their resume and dress for success.

  In addition to the job fair, a series of workshops will be offered during the day:

  • 9:10-9:30 a.m. -  employer expectations by Debra Hunter with Acme Staffing

  • 9:30-10 a.m. - resume writing tips by Donna Lay, AWC Career Development

  • 10-10:30 a.m. - job search tips

  •10:30-11 a.m. - interview skills by Mel Parker, AWC Career Development

  To assist during the economic downturn, AWC career development coordinators will be offering workshops and job fairs over the next few months.

Selling to the
federal government

  Learn how to sell your goods and services to the federal government during a seminar conducted for small business owners by the U.S. Small Business Administration with contracting officers from Yuma Proving Ground.

  The free seminar will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Yuma Park & Swap Conference Room, 4000 S. 4th Ave.

Hiring the right person

  The seminar, "Essential Steps to Hire the Right Person for the Job: It’s More than a Gut Feeling,” will be offered from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Arizona Western College Entrepreneurial Center, 1351 S. Redondo Center Drive.

  Cost is $44. The seminar will be facilitated by Kay Eldridge, PHR, city of Yuma training and development.

Employee safety training

  The Yuma Area Safety Council is making some changes begining this month to the OSHA safety presentations it sponsors each month in an effort to encourage greater participation by local employers, announced Chris Williams, council president.

  The classes are being moved to the Yuma Safety Center, 3143  E. 33rd Place in the Ramster Business Park, to have access to better audio/visual and services. Refreshments will be served.

  In addition, the safety council will now hold its monthly safety roundtable in conjunction with the training. The meetings provide information on local events and services and give local employers and employees a venue to ask safety questions, share safety tips and network. Members and non-members are welcome.

  The next event will be Thursday, with the OSHA ergonomics presentation from 8:30 to 11:15 a.m., the YASC safety roundtable from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and the OSHA heat stress presentation from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Homebuyers seminar

  Several Century 21 Osborne Realty agents will present a homebuyers seminar from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Heritage Library, 350 S. 3rd Ave., in the auditorium.

  Four agents, including broker John Osborne, will answer questions and give out information on such topics as the difference between a short sale and foreclosure and the role of the buyer's Realtor. Durana Grapoli, from Century 21 Mortgage, will address such lending topics as “What do I do first?” and “Do I qualify for the new income tax credit?”

  The seminar is free and open to the public. It will be hosted by Mary Barajas, Sandy Allen and Vicki Pinkus of Century 21 Osborne Realty.

AWC hosts 'green' fair

  Arizona Western College will host the second annual Let’s Go Green sustainability fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22 on the main campus in the new science building.

  The event will provide information on green products, the importance of recycling and how each person can make a difference. The fair is presented by AWC students, faculty and staff and sponsored by Allied Waste, Mission Disposal and The Sun.

QuickBooks workshop

  A one-day workshop on beginning QuickBooks will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 24 at the Arizona Western College Entrepreneurial Center, 1351 S. Redondo Center Drive, Suite 101. The cost of $110 includes the textbook.

  The workshop will provide basic information on using QuickBooks for accounting chores.

Cell phone power tools

  Learn how to use your cell phone more productively during the next "Brown Bag" seminar by the Arizona Western College Small Business Development Center. Bring your cell phone, regardless of the brand or type, and learn new techniques that work as easily as pressing "send."

  The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. April 22 at the AWC Entrepreneurial Center, 1351 S. Redondo Center Drive. Cost is $10. Participants bring their own lunch.
