The Arizona Western College music department is presenting an inaugural edition of Festival Yuma 2012, a selection of classical concerts featuring musicians from Yuma and beyond.
The performances will be from Feb. 3 through March 19 and include AWC students and staff as well as highly acclaimed world-class performers. All concerts are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to support the AWC Music Department Scholarship Fund.
The festival will open up with classical pianist Pauline Martin and transition into “A Night of Tangos, Habaneras and Romantic Music” with accordionist Boki Cvetkovski, pianist Valentin Bogdan and cellist Margaret Fenske.
A vocal recital will feature AWC voice professors in addition to another performance by the AWC Community Band of works inspired by folk music.
The festival will take place at various performance venues around Yuma, including the Theatre on the Arizona Western College Campus, First United Methodist Church of Yuma, Cibola High School Auditorium and St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
“We feel that this particular festival is the music department's way of giving back for all the support that our community shows us throughout the year,” said Bogdan, AWC professor of music.
“This is an event that we decided to put together in order to continue one of the mission statements at the college, which is to enrich the cultural life of they Yuma community. I've always believed personally, and my colleagues as well, I'm sure, that a college most be the epicenter of the cultural life of that city.
“Some of the artists are local, some are young and some are extremely well-established throughout the United States ... I'm really excited about the emerging musicians concert that is going to take place featuring our top music students at AWC.”
