CHRISTOPHER MONTIEL

Robbery attempt suspect in custody

A man arrested Thursday by the Maricopa Police Department reportedly has admitted to attempting to rob the Mohave State Bank in Yuma last month.

According to the Yuma Police Department, Christopher Montiel, 39, of Maricopa, was arrested Thursday on an unrelated charge and made the admission during an interview with Maricopa police.

Montiel is in custody on that unrelated charge at the Pinal County Detention Center. YPD, however, has obtained a felony warrant for Montiel, and he will be transported to the Yuma County Adult Detention Center.

On Dec. 11, at about 1:25 p.m., a bank robber fled the scene before getting any money in a botched robbery attempt at the Mohave State Bank. The suspect was described as in his 30s, with a medium to heavy build.

The suspect, who was wearing a blue ball cap, gray long-sleeve shirt, jeans and sunglasses, handed the teller a note and also verbally requested money. No weapon was seen, no money was given to the suspect and no injuries were reported. The robber fled in a dark gray or blue vehicle.

YPD encourages anyone with information about this case to call Detective Escott at 373-4680 or YPD at 373-4700, or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous.
