Cibola standout named top Big Sky freshman
After a stellar high school career, the postseason accoclades continue to mount for Alyssa Wahl.
The Northern Arizona forward was named the Big Sky Conference Outstanding Freshman. She is the fourth Lumberjack to earn the honor, and the first since Lynsie Blau in 2001. She also earned honorable mention all-league recognition.
The 2003 Cibola graduate is ranked among the Big Sky Conference top-10 in five categories - third in free-throw percentage (79.1), fourth in rebounding (7.4 pg), sixth in blocks (0.85 pg) and ninth in scoring (12.7 ppg) and field-goal percentage (40.9).
She currently owns the NAU record for points by a freshman (343) and needs just one rebound to become just the second freshman in team history (and seventh player overall) to record 200 rebounds in a season.
Wahl was selected a two-time The Sun/Yuma Rotary Female Athlete of the Year, named The Sun/Yuma Rotary Club Girls Basketball Player of the Year in 2003 and was also awarded first-team All-State by The Arizona Republic.
The fifth seeded Lumberjacks (12-15) will face fourth seed Montana State (14-13) in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Championship tournament 8:05 p.m. Thursday in Missoula, Mont.
