Agencies collecting donations for victims
This story originally appeared in the Sept. 13, 2001, edition of The Sun.
Seeing the images of mayhem in New York City and Washington, D.C., Yuma-area residents, like other Americans, may feel vulnerable, even powerless, against terrorism.
But, in fact, there are things they can do to help the victims of Tuesday's jetliner attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
The Yuma Jaycees, working in conjunction with the Arizona Jaycees, are asking residents to donate various items to help the victims and rescue personnel. Needed are water, Gatorade, PowerAde, flashlights, batteries, blankets, pillows and clothing, said Yuma Jaycee Pat Collins.
Items can be dropped off through Friday at three locations: Alta/Quinn Lift, 3579 E. Gila Ridge Road; Collins Service Center, 5800 E. Highway 80; and Yuma Proving Ground, Building 2102.
All items will be shipped Saturday morning from Yuma to the disaster areas.
For more information, contact Chance Corpron at 920-0744 or 627-2892.
Wells Fargo and National Bank of Arizona branches in Arizona also have established accounts to collect donations for the Red Cross to aid disaster victims. Contributions can be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund at any Wells Fargo branch or to account no. 0060038131 at any National Bank of Arizona branch.
Area residents also can help out victims by contributing blood during a five-day drive that will take place in Yuma.
Those wishing to contribute blood should make appointments. Times, dates and locations of the drive, organized by United Blood Services, are as follows:
• Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Yuma County Health Department, 2200 W. 28th St. For an appointment to give blood this day, call 336-7061.
