Arizona Blue Stake and several local facility owners will present the 2008 annual Damage Prevention Seminar regarding the Blue Stake program in Yuma April 8.
The seminar will review the dig laws of Arizona, how the Blue Stake Center can help comply with the law, trench safety, training resources, and how to prevent damages and save lives and money. Participating facility owners will cover working and digging safely around their facilities.
The seminar in Yuma will be held at 6 p.m. April 8 at the Ramada Inn-Chilton Conference Center, 300 E. 32nd St. The program will last about 2-1/2 hours and will include dinner.
The seminar is free for excavation personnel, but space is limited and pre-registration is required. The registration form is available at www.azbluestake.com.
-Successful leaders seminar
The Yuma Training Alliance continues its season with perennial favorite Steve Gilliland, who will appear at the Yuma Civic Center at 8 a.m. April 8.
At one time or another, everyone in a position of authority - whether in a large organization or a local volunteer group - wonders what the key to great leadership is. In "Succeeding as a New Supervisor," Gilliland shares universal wisdom that contributes to meaningful relationships with ourselves and others both at work and at home.
Gilliland's motto is, "If you take care of people, the business will follow."

-Desert safety seminar
A desert safety seminar will be presented by Scott Fisher from Arizona Game and Fish from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 18 at Yuma County Department Development Services, Aldrich Hall Auditorium, 2351 W. 26th St.
Topics will include hazards of the desert (to include your own backyard), desert wildlife, poisonous and venomous dwellers of the desert, wilderness first aid and survival tips and equipment.
The concern is that employees be aware of hazards they may encounter whether in the course of their jobs or during personal activities.

Note that no food or drinks are allowed in the auditorium. Only bottled water with lids may be brought into the room.
-Essential steps to hire right person for job
The workshop, "More Than a Gut Feeling," will provide information on the essential steps to hiring the right person for a job. It will be held from 8 to 11:30 a.m. April 18 at the Arizona Western College Entrepreneurial Center, 1351 S. Redondo Center Drive.
The workshop will cover planning and conducting an effective interview. Some topics will include:
-Understand how using a behavioral example can help you assess the presence or absence of a skill.
-Explain why it is important to make hiring selections based on facts and information and not a gut feeling.
-Explain why the concept of "the predictor of future behavior is past behavior" is very important.
-Recognize why some questions cannot be legally asked in the interview process.
The cost will be $39 plus a $5 material fee. Presenter will be Kay Eldridge, training and development coordinator for the city of Yuma.
