AWC board seat to be filled
There's an open seat on the Arizona Western College District governing board.
With the recent retirement of Steve Shadle, Yuma County School Superintendent Tom Tyree is looking to fill the vacant position.
Tyree said he would like to appoint a new board member before the board's March 13 board meeting.
“The appointee will serve through Dec. 31, 2012, and will have the option of running for election this fall during the general election,” said Tyree. “AWC district governing board members are elected from both Yuma and La Paz counties. Vacancies that occur between elections require the county superintendent to make an appointment or call for a special election.”
Letters of interest should be submitted by 5 p.m. Feb. 17. They should include the applicant's address to confirm that they live in the required district, which includes voter precincts 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13, 16, 33, 35, 37, 38, 39, 40 and 41; some information on the applicant's background; qualifications; and reasons for wanting to serve on the board.
Tyree added that applicants should be well rounded and have some knowledge of how a college board operates and should be flexible as meetings are held at 9 a.m. on the second Tuesday of every month. Interviews will be conducted the week of Feb. 20, and a new board member is scheduled to be announced by Feb. 24.
