Tools for successful progress

A seasoned gentleman of years past operated a small rowboat. He transported passengers across a little lake.

One day a passenger noticed one of the wooden oars had the word “Faith” carved on it and the other oar the word “Works.” Curiosity caused the passenger to inquire what the meaning was.

“I will show you,” the owner said. He dropped one oar and rowed with the other — and proceeded in circles. Dropping the first oar, he picked up the other oar, rowing as before. The boat went in circles again the other way. No progress was made — the boat only traveled in circles.

Following his demonstration, the seasoned sailor picked up both Faith and Works, rowing them together. The boat raced toward the desired destination. As the passenger was transported across the lake, the rowing sailor explained, “It takes both in life, like it does in the boat.”

A discerning, wise person said, “For success, pray like it all depends on God, and work like it all depends on you.”

The Rev. Paul Killingsworth serves as pastor at Yuma First Assembly.
