‘One Book' takes on Racing in the Rain

One dog, one book – and One Book Yuma.

Now is the time to start preparing for the upcoming One Book Yuma, an annual event designed to encourage literacy and engage the community in discussion about relevant and interesting topics.

This year's title, “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein, is a study of the human condition as seen through the eyes of a preternaturally soulful dog, Enzo. Enzo sees the highs and lows in his master Denny Swift's life, from the death of his wife to the custody battle with his in-laws over his daughter to the struggles he endures to make it in the world of race car driving. Enzo shares all that he has learned as his earthly life – at least, the one as a canine – comes to an end. Tissues are advised.

The event will be held Feb. 28-March 1. One Book Yuma is a partnership between the Yuma Sun, Northern Arizona University-Yuma, Arizona Western College and Yuma County libraries.

Participants should read the novel between now and the start of the event, then plan to come out to one of the local free talks with Stein. The author will be in Yuma to hold question and answer sessions as well as book signings. The book, a New York Times bestseller, should be easily available at local booksellers and libraries.

“If you haven't read the book, I highly suggest you start reading it,” said Adrianne Wagner, Yuma Sun marketing manager.
