ON DECK: Pacquiao, boxing both lost on Saturday

When Juan Manuel Marquez landed that right hand to the face of Manny Pacquiao, he may have done more than gotten redemption from the previous three bouts between the boxers.

He also landed a blow to the sport of boxing, too. As Pacquiao laid motionless on the canvas, a lot of the allure of a potential fight between the Filipino and Floyd Mayweather Jr. went out the window as well. With UFC's emerging popularity nipping at boxing's heels, the potential fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao was going to be a rating's dream — if the two ever actually stepped into the ring together. They were the two biggest names in boxing. Now Mayweather is the clear-cut name of boxing but he's 35-years old. Pacquiao is 33 and was made to look utterly human despite winning most of the fight against Marquez, who is 39-years-old himself. Boxing needs personality and names to survive. And one of its biggest spent Saturday night laying face down on the floor.
