Prep boys tennis preview

Cibola Raiders

Last year: 13-1

Top returners: Brett Boyer, sr.; Abijay Murugesan, soph.; Caleb Villapudua, jr.; Manashe Zvavamwe, jr.

Key newcomers: Edgar Franco, fresh.

Coach Duncan Phillips comments: On Brett Boyer: “He’s a worker. I think his biggest quality besides his huge forehand, he’s just improved his game. His biggest quality is losing is not in his vocabulary. He hates to lose, he reminds me of me when I was playing. You have to carry him off the court in stretcher before he quits.”

The lowdown: Phillips returns his player of the year in Brett Boyer along with several other upperclassmen that should make a potent rotation. The Raiders have only lost three matches in the last two years and were knocked out in the first round of the state playoffs last year by South Pointe, who had won the state title the two consecutive years prior. Phillips said the fact that Boyer didn’t play football this year will also help his game.
