Brownie's Restaurant

BEST AMERICAN FOOD, BEST BREAKFAST, BEST CHICKEN FRIED STEAK

February 6, 2008 - 4:58 PM

Brownie's Restaurant has been serving Yuma for about 35 years. And despite all the new competition in town, Brownie's has once again been voted Yuma's Best in several categories.

The Sun's readers say Brownie's put out Yuma's Best American Food, Best Breakfast and Best Chicken Fried Steak in 2007.

"I'm honored that people voted for me," said Bobby Brooks, owner. "That they have the confidence in me after all these years - close to 35 years now - and with all the competition coming here.

"It's an old-fashioned family restaurant. We do all our own meat cutting. It's a working man's restaurant.

"We're not fancy, we're just good.

"I'm a butcher by trade, so the chicken fries (chicken fried steak) are homemade. We never freeze them.

"All our meat is fresh. It's boxed meat. We cut it ourselves and we don't freeze it.

"(Brownie's) is kind of an old, ’50s style restaurant. Everybody knows everybody, and you never see a stranger."

Brooks said maybe it's the fresh-cut steaks and Kammann sausage that make Brownie's breakfasts popular.

Whatever the reasons why it was voted Yuma's Best, Brooks is grateful and he credits his employees for the award.

"Thank you very much for the bottom of my heart," he says to those who voted for the restaurant.

"But I don't think you need to give this honor to me. I think you need to give it to my employees. Without my employees, it couldn't happen."

Brownie's is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.

The address is 1145 S. 4th Ave., and the number is 783-7911.
