Comings and Goings: Plans submitted for new state building
Plans have been submitted for a new Arizona Department of Economic Security office building, reported Alan Kircher, deputy city building official. The 40,000-square-foot building will be located on Redondo Center Drive south of Home Depot.
---
In other building activity around the city, Kircher reported:
• Plans have been submitted for tenant improvements for a Snap Fitness gym on the west side of Yuma at Mission Valley Plaza, 24th Street and Avenue C. This will be the third gym in the Yuma area for owner Josh Schaubach. The other two are at Las Palmillas Shopping Center and in the Foothills.
• A permit has been issued for renovations to the Subway at 1150 W. 8th St.
• Dirt work has begun at the Big Curve Shopping Center at the site of the Asian Star restaurant that was destroyed by a fire a year ago. A building planned for the site will provide a new home for the Oriental restaurant as well as have some retail space.

A service is now available to Yuma-area businesses that provides a one-stop shop for phone and Internet services.
CarrierBid Communications acts as the project manager, finding and helping set up the telecommunications systems best suited for a client, explained John Gelhard, agent manager. He added that it works best for a new company or one that is moving rather than intruding on an existing service.
As such, CarrierBid Communications works closely with Qwest, Time Warner Cable and Integra in the Yuma area, he said.
The company also provides ongoing support for service changes and trouble calls.
There is no charge to the clients, Gelhard said. For more information, call 329-4445.

Also on the "Going" - and, unfortunately, growing - side of this column is Blockbuster Video, 11274 S. Fortuna Road, Suite D, in the Foothills. The store was closed last week, a year to the month after the company closed its Yuma store.
Jim Porterfield, spokesman for the franchise owner, said increasing competition such as online access led to the closure.
(5-Star Video at 11525 S. Fortuna Road is still open for the convenience of Foothills-area residents.)
