Comings and Goings: Foothills Denny's opens Sunday

The new Denny's in the Foothills will open for business at 8 p.m. Sunday and from there on it will be open 24/7 for breakfast, lunch, dinner and anything in between, reported franchise owner Mike Manos.

As crews worked to put the finishing touches on the building and employees trained, they attracted a lot of attention from area residents who stopped by in hopes the activity meant the restaurant was open, he said. And now it will be.

He noted that the restaurant is opening just as Denny's is introducing some new menu items and rolling out a new coffee, all of which will be available at the Foothills eatery.

Manos said he hired around 60 people, and some of them trained at the 16th Street Denny's for a few weeks to get “seasoned.”

The 4,200-square-foot sit-down restaurant is located just east of Chase Bank near the Foothills Fry's grocery store.

Manos had high praise to the local contractors who built the restaurant, including general contractor Bill DeNise and several subcontractors. “It was the best construction experience I've had,” he said.

In addition to the two Yuma-area restaurants, Manos operates two in El Centro and several in San Diego.

Its focus is on providing a healthy “eat-out” alternative, with build-your-own salad bar and use of sugar-free, fat-free and gluten free items as much as possible.

In addition to the salad bar, the restaurant has a specialty salad menu, homemade soups and cold and hot sandwiches. Coming soon is “Juicy's” Nutri Bar, providing healthy fruit and veggie drinks.

Hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The restaurant can be reached at 276-3114.

An addition is being built to the 10,000-square-foot Frito-Lay warehouse and distribution center in Yuma, confirmed property owner Dan King. It will add 5,000 square feet to the building to meet the needs of the growing market in the Yuma area for the company.

King said he hopes construction can start by the end of the month. JRP Construction will be the general contractor.

The warehouse is located at 4106 S. Avenue 3-1/4E.

Craig Crossland, longtime owner of Yuma Office Equipment, has sold the business to Daniel Bombard but will continue as sales manager of managed services and software.

Crossland said he has worked with Bombard off and on for more than 25 years, and Bombard has been the assistant manager and IT director for the business for the past nine years.

As the business continues to evolve, it has become more of an IT company than a copier company, although it still sells and services several lines of copiers and other office equipment, Crossland said. And all technicians are network certified.

The business has a network operating center in which networks are monitored around the clock to ensure things run smoothly rather than getting a call when something goes wrong, Crossland explained.

The business was founded by his grandfather in 1934 in El Centro. He also had a typewriter business in Yuma, and Crossland recalls helping out as a boy cleaning and servicing school typewriters. Crossland took over as owner of the business in 1991. The El Centro store was sold 15 years ago. And now, with no one in the family interested in carrying on the business, he has sold it to his “right-hand man” to focus on what he likes to do best.

The business is located at 340 S. Main St. and can be reached at 343-2298.
