Sunstone creates cancer support group in Yuma

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Sunstone Cancer Support Centers, a Tucson-based nonprofit agency, will offer a support group for women in Yuma who are cancer survivors.

The group's first meeting will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Sunstone's Yuma center in the Gandolfo building, 202 S. 1st Ave., Suite 102. The group will then meet there on the first Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m.

The cancer support group is one of several Sunstone is establishing, and its debut meeting will serve as a kickoff event for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Women who have been recently diagnosed with cancer, are undergoing cancer treatment or have finished treatment are invited to join the support group.

The support group will be bilingual, and literature will be available. Visitors who need wheelchair accessibility should park in back of the building.

Other services Sunstone will be offering for men and women are movement classes such as yoga and tai chi, and touch therapies such as massage, Reiki, acupuncture and healing touch.

Sunstone will offer a variety of educational classes, including classes on nutrition, long-term survivorship and a speakers series. The Yuma center also provides a lending library for survivors and a loan program for wigs, scarves, turbans and hats for those individuals who have hair loss from chemotherapy.

For more information on services or to volunteer with Sunstone, call Mary Monk, outreach program coordinator, 783-5595.
