Candidate list for mayor, city council at 10
The list of candidates for mayor and three city council seats in San Luis, Ariz., has grown to nine, now that two incumbent councilmen have taken out nominating petitions.
The incumbents, Councilmen Rafael Torres and Marco Antonio Reyes Jr., had previously said they planned to seek second four-year terms on the council.
They and any other candidates have a Dec. 9 deadline to gather and submit petition signatures from registered San Luis voters to City Hall, in order to appear on the ballot for the city’s March primary election.
Of all the hopefuls, so far only former Mayor and Councilwoman Nieves Riedel has gathered the necessary signatures and returned the petitions to the city.
Riedel plans to run for mayor in the primary. The incumbent, Juan Carlos Escamilla, took out petitions on Wednesday.
Along with Escamilla, Torres and Reyes, Councilman Archibaldo Gurrola is wrapping up his term of office in May of next year. He also said he planned to seek a new four-year term, although he had not taken out nominating petitions as of Wednesday.
Others who have taken out nominating petitions for either mayor or council seats are Carlos Bernal, David Lara, Benjamin Garcia Jr., Marco A. Pinzon, Jessica Anderson and Africa Carrasco.
In the primary, any candidate who receives more than half the vote total will automatically claim office. The remaining seats will be contested by the next highest vote getters in the May general election.
