Car gets stuck on utility pole guide wire

Yuma firefighters and police responded to an automobile accident late Monday afternoon, and found quite a scene once they arrived — a car balancing precariously on utility pole guide wire.

According to Sgt. Clint Norred, spokesman for the Yuma Police Department, the accident happened shortly before 3 p.m. at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and 16th Street.

Norred said the vehicle, a 2004 Buick driven by Corey Neider, 24, of Yuma, was attempting to make a left-hand turn on to 16th Street from Pacific, when he lost control of the car and struck an APS utility pole guide wire.

After hitting the guide wire, Norred said the car continued up it before coming to a stop vertically with the front of the vehicle up in the air, and the rear of the car resting against the ground.

Mike Erfert, a spokesman for the Yuma Fire Department, said firefighters had to use Res-Q-Jack stabilization equipment to stabilize the vehicle before they could rescue the driver of the vehicle. Because of the way the vehicle was perched on the guide wires, firefighters were concerned the vehicle would tip over and fall during a rescue attempt. The eastbound lane of 16th Street was closed during the rescue.

Neider was not injured in the accident, but according Norred, he was cited for failure to control his vehicle. APS was also called to scene and reported that the accident only caused minor damage to the pole and guide wire.
