Brothers charged with attempted murder in river confluence brawl
Criminal complaints were filed Friday afternoon in Yuma Justice Court against two of the three suspects recently arrested in connection with a June 9 brawl at the confluence of the Colorado and Gila rivers, which left five people injured.
Appearing before Justice of the Peace pro tem Alicia Aguirre, in separate hearings, brothers Sergio Castro, 24, and Benjamin Castro, 21, were informed that they each were being charged with attempted second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of endangerment, and one count of disorderly conduct. All are felonies.
No charges, however, were filed against 21-year-old Iris Silva, who was also arrested earlier this week along with the Castro brothers.
In addition to scheduling their next court dates — preliminary hearings — for 4 p.m. on July 5, Aguirre also ordered their bonds remain at the amount they had previously been set at, $150,000 for Sergio Castro and $25,000 for Benjamin Castro.
Aguirre then appointed the Yuma County Public Defender's Office to represent Sergio Castro and the Yuma County Legal Defender's Office to represent Benjamin Castro and that they each pay $750 toward the cost of that representation.
According to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office, at about 7:30 p.m. that day a large group of people began fighting at the confluence area near Avenue 4 1/2E and the levee road. Five people were injured, including a man who sustained life-threatening injuries after being stabbed.
Another man grabbed what appeared to be a shotgun and began shooting. There were no reports of gunshot wounds as a result.
Witnesses reported the fight to 911. Deputies were dispatched to the scene, but most of those involved had already fled the area.
The man who sustained the serious stab wound was later transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center for treatment.
