PK goal lifts Cibola boys over Gila Ridge

The Cibola boys soccer team exacted a little revenge on Thursday against Gila Ridge, and made sure their seniors and head coach got a win in their final home match.

The Raiders went into overtime for a second straight night but came away victors this time as Sergio Gomez scored in the 90th minute on a penalty kick, and Cibola hung on for a 2-1 win.

"He's the one that got taken down on the penalty, and he wanted to take the ball," said Cibola coach Victor Preciado, who will finish his 30-year coaching career tonight. "He's one of the leaders on this team, but he said after the game he was nervous."

Gomez was not the only hero for the Raiders on Thursday. Francisco Garcia tied the game with 16 seconds remaining in regulation on a 35-yard shot following a cleared corner kick to extend the match.

Gila Ridge, which won the first meeting of the year between the two squads, got its only goal in the 74th minute from Noel Galindo.

Cibola (4-7 AIA) will finish the season at Yuma High tonight, the team's fourth game in four days.
