LOCAL GLANCE (March 4): Prep Boys Golf, Prep Baseball, Prep Boys Tennis, JUCO Softball, Horse Shoes

Cibola senior Yesong Han shot a 3-over-par 147 to win the Junior Golf Association of Arizona Thunderbird Invitational Saturday and Sunday at Papago Golf Course.

Han had opened a lead around the 11th hole, but Mikayla Harmon pulled within two strokes on the last hole, which she birdied.

With the chance for a birdie with a 30-foot putt, Han got to within 3 feet of the hole, setting up what she called the most nerve-wracking 3-foot par putt of her career.

“If I didn't make that, it would have gone into a playoff,” Han said. “Then you really don't know what's going to happen.”

Han entered the day with a one-stroke lead over three different golfers.

“I was very nervous. On the front nine, I was really nervous because I was afraid of the other girls catching up. But by the 11th hole, I opened up a lead and I was just calm and did what I did.”

Han just transferred back to Cibola — where she played her first three prep golf seasons — from Hamilton. She finished fourth in the state as the Huskies took second. Last year with the Raiders, she was 13th in the state.

Han said she committed to play for Colorado State next year.

JUCO SOFTBALL

Ploesch wins POW

Arizona Western center fielder Courtnie Ploesch was named the ACCAC Division I Softball Player of the Week on Monday.

Ploesch hit .583 with eight runs and three RBIs in helping the Matadors to a 4-0 week, including their first sweep of Phoenix College in eight years.

For the year, she's hitting .392 with 23 RBIs and two home runs.

The Matadors return to action today with a home doubleheader against Pima.

PREP BASEBALL

San Pasqual defeats West Shores

The Warriors have gone through a rough patch of pitching lately, but their bats bailed them out again defeating West Shores 11-8 Monday.

Andrew Lomaintewa and Tommy Gonzales each had three hits for the Warriors including Lomaintewa's two doubles.

Gonzales and Lomaintewa also were the two pitchers.

“The good thing about it is we're facing pitching that's identical to us,” San Pasqual coach Faron Owl said. “Pitching we need to work on, we're trying to find that solution to throw better strikes.”

PREP BOYS TENNIS

Cibola beats Lake Havasu

Cibola staved off multiple tiebreakers to defeat Lake Havasu 6-3 Monday afternoon.

Cibola's Brett Boyer won the No. 1 match 6-1, 6-1, and MyungSu Son won the No. 2 match 6-2, 6-2. Abijay Murugesan, Edgar Franco and Caleb Villapudua all lost their respective matches.

“The rest of the team didn't play well,” Cibola coach Duncan Phillips said. “It was not one of our better outings.”

PREP GIRLS TENNIS

Cibola falls to Lake Havasu

The Raiders wrapped up the No. 1 and 2 singles matches, but lost the bottom four leading to a 6-3 loss to Lake Havasu Monday afternoon.

Leslie Cruz-Rivera won her No. 1 match 6-2, 6-0, while Amrutha Doniparthi won the No. 2 match 6-2, 6-1.

Doniparthi and Kim Harris won the No. 2 doubles match 8-4.

HORSESHOES

Tournament slated for March 16

The Yuma Horseshoes Pitching Association will hold its Windup Tournament March 16 at Kennedy Park.

Sign-in is at 9:30 a.m., with the tournament running from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Registration is $20, with all of the money going to the top three finishers. Only sanctioned players may compete.
