ON DECK: Social Media

Social media isn't always your friend in the newspaper business.

We here at the Yuma Sun love to keep the readers informed anyway we can, and that means lots of tweeting. I try to tweet as much as I can during games, but sometimes it gets in the way.

For instance, Tuesday night I was out covering Cibola boys soccer upsetting San Luis. I thought San Luis had pulled ahead 2-1, but as I had my head buried in my phone tweeting out the goal, I missed the fact that they called the goal off all together due to offsides. The game ended with Cibola celebrating a 2-1 victory, but I was all ready for overtime. I was wondering, why is everyone shaking hands? I quickly realized that my notes were wrong, and Cibola had won.

I rushed down to the field to ask questions about a totally different game than the one I thought I was watching.

An interesting experience, one from which I certainly learned some twittering lessons.
