City's General Plan receives wide margin of votes

City of Yuma voters have approved the 2012 update to the city's state-required General Plan.

Proposition 402, the measure on the ballot to ratify the city's General Plan, passed by a 63 percent to 37 percent margin, according to final, unofficial results released by Yuma County early Wednesday morning. The measure had 8,488 yes votes to 4,917 no votes.

The city's General Plan provides general guidance for the overall development of Yuma for the next 10-20 years. It identifies land available for residential, commercial, industrial and other types of uses while also seeking to protect important sources of jobs such as agriculture and the military and preserving the community's quality of life.

It also sets the stage for the city's Capital Improvement Program that prioritizes and funds such projects as roadways improvements, new fire stations and parks.

State statute mandates that the city have a general plan and update it every 10 years.

“I thank the residents of the city for their support,” said City Administrator Greg Wilkinson. “Now we have a plan that will help us work through important planning and zoning issues for years to come.”
