Man accused of trying to smuggle almost $1M worth of cocaine
A Mexican citizen was arrested Wednesday after allegedly attempting to smuggle almost $1 million worth of cocaine past a checkpoint near Spot Road on Interstate 8.
According to Border Patrol officials, the alleged smuggler, a 64-year-old man whose identity has not been released to the public, attempted to drive a blue Ford Expedition through the checkpoint, but was directed to a secondary inspection area after a working dog indicated the possible presence of contraband inside his vehicle.
Upon further inspection, agents allegedly found 14 packages of cocaine hidden in the vehicle's doors worth about $943,000. The driver, who was legally in the United States with lawful permanent resident status, was arrested. Both he and the cocaine were taken into custody by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
