ON DECK: Maryland move doesn't make much sense
When I first heard of college football expansion more than a decade ago, I was pumped.
After all, Miami was joining the first super conference with Virginia Tech and Boston College in college football's first major shake-up in decades.
We're barely 10 years removed from that, and the landscape is barely recognizable — even to someone who has been following all the moves for a decade.
Maryland and Rutgers will announce they're Big Ten-bound at the start of the 2014 season. And while the Big Ten has made some shrewd moves in expansion, this one is befuddling.
Those two teams really don't add much to the party. Rutgers is an Illinois or Purdue level football team. Maryland is a great college basketball program but has lost some luster over the years.
It's probably all about money, though, to me the Big Ten is better off where it's at.
