ON DECK: Catching up on college basketball
It's something that usually happens this time of year.
I'll find out something shocking in the world of sports — there's a team that's good in college basketball that I didn't even realize.
Because the world of college basketball has slowly evolved into a one-and-done sport, most of my attention goes to the NBA. It's not that I don't love the college game, it's just difficult to learn a new crop of names every year — if I wanted that, I would have become a teacher.
The surprising news this year? The Minnesota Golden Gophers are No. 9 in the country? As in, the school that's good at hockey?
And North Carolina, the perennial juggernaut of college basketball, isn't even in the Top 25.
I think that the rule that makes players stay at least one year in college has helped develop players better for the NBA, but it's left college basketball a revolving door. But I'll have to remember the Gophers when the brackets are released come March.
