Yuma High choir performance to honor 9/11
Another choral concert is being held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, in addition to other historical events.
The music department at Arizona Western College will hold a choral concert entitled, “Recordamus: We Remember,” open to the community.
“The concert will consist of mostly classical pieces, but there will be two folk songs: the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’, and ‘When Johnny Comes Marching Home’,” said AWC music professor Brent Rogers.
“Within those sets of classical pieces there will be a lot of variety - some older pieces, some very new, some upbeat, some more subdued. I think this will be a concert that will be enjoyable for anybody.”
The concert will held on Friday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1550 S. 14th Ave.
A $5 donation in requested to benefit the AWC choral program.

The Yuma High School choir program invites the public to a concert in tribute to everyone killed during the 9/11 attacks and also to military still fighting overseas.
About 60 performing and concert choir students are slated to sing a medley of various patriotic, folk, popular and African American spiritual songs, said Yuma High School Choir Director Kelsey Rogers, who has been teaching at the school for about a year now.
Rogers explained that when she first realized it was the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, she felt like the students should do something in remembrance of everyone effected.
“Part of what's important to me about this concert is teaching my students about the heritage of the United States, patriotism and respect for their country,” she said.
“That's something that I sometimes find lacking in my students is an understanding of how to pay respect to those that have died for them to be free. So that's something that we have talked a fair bit about. One of the big objectives of this concert is to help the students feel some pride in their country.”
The concert will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. at Snider Auditorium located on Yuma High School's campus at 400 S. 6th Ave.
Rogers said the show is open to the public and tickets are available for $5 at the door or $3 pre-sale. To purchase pre-sale tickets, contact Rogers at krogers1@yumaed.org or at 271-9844.
