Mexican consulate lining up cultural events

Mexico's consulate in Yuma has planned a full calendar of cultural events for the public in 2013, among them photo and art exhibits and film and performing arts presentations.

“2012 was a good year for us for culture; we have lots of activities to offer the community,” said Manuel Cuen, spokesman for the consulate. “We anticipate that this year will also be good.”

Although the date hasn't been set, the consulate plans to bring to Yuma “En el nombre de Dios” (“In the Name of God”), a photo exhibit by noted Sonora photographer Alejandra Platt that portrays the Mexican state's varied ethnic groups.

The display has made its way to Mexican consulates around the country and internationally, but has never before come to Yuma.

“For logistical reasons, we weren't able to bring it here last year. This year it's going to be possible to bring it; it's just a question of working out the dates,” said Cuen.

In July, the consulate will join with Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History in bringing “Un recorrido por la historia de Trincheras” (“A Journey Through the History of Trincheras”), a museum display relating to pre-Hispanic cultures who lived in what is now northern Sonora, Cuen said.

Planned but not yet scheduled is a Mexican film series adapted from some of Mexico's and Latin America's notable literary works, among them “Pedro Paramo” and “Dona Barbara.”

During the week of Cinco de Mayo, the consulate and the Yuma County Library District will present a series of contemporary Mexican films, Cuen added.

He said the consulate will again host programs and presentations that have proved popular with audiences in the past, among them “La Noche Bohemia” and “Encuentro de Poetas Migrantes” (“Encounter of Migrant Poets”). For the latter event, the consulate hopes to bring to Yuma noted poets Tino Villanueva and Jaime Labastida.

And the consulate will again host the a night of musical and dance performances at the Historic Yuma Theatre in a celebration of Mexican Independence Day in September.
