Dance contest to be held for youths

A dance crew competition is being held for youths ages 11 to 18, and the deadline to sign up is rapidly approaching.

The Yuma County Anti-Drug Coalition (YCADC) is holding a “Yuma's Best Dance Crew” first-time event to celebrate youth that choose alternative activities such as dance over using drugs.

YCAD chair Hilda Nordell, who is also a prevention program director for the Yuma Family YMCA, explained that this a free event and for youths who love to dance all styles. Crews of five to seven should register by March 4 on Facebook at www.facebook.com/YCADC or at the YMCA, 2550 S. 4th Avenue. Only 15 crews will be accepted to participate.

Prizes of $125, $75 and $50 will be given out for first, second and third place respectively.

“For those teams that will be competing, one of the judging criterias will be the ‘most supported team' so come out and support your dance crew,” said Nordell. “This is the first event of this kind that the coalition is hosting and we are thrilled to see the outcome.”

The event will be held on March 9 at the Martin Luther King Center, 300 S. 13th Ave., from 6 to 9 p.m. For more information, call 317-0522 or 276-4083.

Nordell said that YCADC exists to bring substance abuse prevention, education, awareness and treatment resources to community members. YCADC, which began as the Yuma County Meth Nucleus Group in 2005, has made it their mission to help eradicate the misuse of alcohol, prescription drugs, marijuana an other drugs in Yuma County.
