2 hurt in rollover on I-8
Two people were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center after being involved in a rollover accident on Interstate 8 near milepost 1 Wednesday afternoon.
At about 2:52 p.m., a silver Lexus SUV traveling westbound toward California veered off the right shoulder of the interstate, rolled over, hit a tree, and came to rest on all four wheels.
The force of the collision shattered the windshield, pushed the roof of the SUV in the front passenger area down below the seat headrest, and plunged the steering wheel down into the floorboard area in front of the driver's seat.
Emergency personnel with the Yuma Fire Department and Rural/Metro Fire Department, as well as officers with Arizona Department of Public Safety, responded to the scene of the crash.
Two occupants in the vehicle were freed from the wreckage and transported to YRMC. The extent of their injuries was unknown as of Wednesday afternoon, although emergency responders on scene noted the occupants were fortunate to survive because this type of wreck could easily have been fatal.
AZDPS is investigating the cause of the collision.
