Diablos win two more at Cecil Fielder World Series

The Yuma Diablos continued their winning ways in the Cecil Fielder Elite World Series, taking both of their games on Day 2.

The Diablos drew eight walks and had just enough clutch hitting in their 4-2 win over the High Desert Baseball Academy.

“The walks put us in a situation and the key hits came up big,” said Diablos manager Faron Owl.

Diablos pitcher Tim Frost performed well, throwing a complete game despite not pitching in the Diablos' rotation in over a month.

Danny Flores and Matt Valdez were the offensive heroes in the early game, each with two-run singles.

Valdez threw a complete game in the Diablos' second game of the day, defeating Team Booom 2-1.

“His fastball was working pretty good,” Owl said. “He was throwing in the upper 80s. He looked smooth and as the game went on in the sixth and seventh inning he seemed to get stronger, which was good. He struggled a little bit in the fourth, but got it back in the fifth.”

Valdez gave up three hits in seven innings of work.

“Our main focus is that the guys that pitch do their job and hopefully they can provide us with seven innings,” Owl said. “If they can provide us with seven innings, then we're doing well defensively and offensively. They all knew it and to every person that was pitching we said, ‘Do your job, keep the ball down and hopefully we can make the plays and hit the ball somewhere.'”

The Diablos are 3-0 to start the tournament and will face Buzitos de Mexicali at 8 a.m. tomorrow on Yuma Catholic Field 1.

“It's a great start,” Owl said. It's hard to anticipate because these teams are solid teams coming from solid programs. You take everything and anything you can (and) hopefully you can take advantage of it.”
