Authorities warn against drunk driving
The Yuma Police Department reminds residents planing to celebrate Thanksgiving with alcoholic beverages to never drive while intoxicated.
“Plan before you go out. Leave your keys at home,” said Sgt. Leanne Worthen, YPD public information officer.
According to YPD, a significant number of fatal collisions in Arizona involve impaired drivers, with holiday weekends tending to increase the number of impaired motorists on roadways.
“The combination of the possibility of increased impaired drivers and drivers not paying attention or being distracted can make for increased chances of folks getting hurt,” Worthen said.
To keep the roadways safe, YPD will place additional officers on patrol to detect and apprehend impaired drivers on both Friday and Saturday.
YPD encourages the public to help them prevent drunken driving collisions by reporting anyone operating a vehicle who appears to be intoxicated to 911.
“If you are driving the roadways, look out for impaired drivers and stay focused on the task at hand, which is driving,” Worthen said.
If a person must travel to another destination, but plans on drinking before the trip, it is essential to designate a sober driver in advance who is willing to make the journey, Worthen added.
“Drinking can impair your judgment so make sound decisions ahead of time. You are more likely to follow through with a designated driver if you have a plan in place.”
