Good reason for Electoral College

I was really surprised to hear Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer speak in favor of doing away with the Electoral College in favor of the popular vote in presidential elections.

Our founders devised the Electoral College system for a very good reason. Without the Electoral College, “flyover country” wouldn't matter at all.

Why would a president campaign in North Dakota and Wyoming for 200,000 votes when California's 20 million are up for grabs? The fact that each state gets votes based on population plus two extra votes for our senators at least partially makes up for popularity disparity.

The United States is not a pure democracy, we are a democratic republic, and the Federalist Papers explain that they arrived at that decision in order to avoid “the tyranny of the majority.”

If we elected a president purely on the popular vote, population centers would have total and complete control. It is important that every state has some say in the outcome of elections.

Without the Electoral College, states in the West would have no say.
