Martin McCamy, of Yuma, a fourth-year School of Pharmacy and Health Professions student at Creighton University, was named to the fall dean's list for 2012-2013 academic year.
Full-time students who earn a 3.5 grade-point average or higher are eligible for the dean's honor roll.
Omar Gonzalez, of Yuma, was named to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln dean's list/honor roll for the fall semester of the 2012-2013 academic year. Grade-point averages are based on a minimum of 12 or more graded semester hours.
Gonzalez is a freshman actuarial science major in the College of Business Administration.
Essay contest winners
The Sunrise Optimist Club of Yuma sponsored its 20th annual essay contest writing on the theme “How Can I Help My Friends Realize their Value?” All high school students under 19 were invited to participate.
The winning essay was submitted by Dina Smith, a student at Gila Ridge High School. Smith's essay will be submitted to state and possibly international competition. She received a gold medal and a $250 first-place prize.
The silver medal winner and recipient of a $100 second-place prize was Caitlyn Osborn; bronze medal winner and recipient of a $50 third-place prize was Jordan M. Northrup, both from Gila Ridge High School.
Gila Mountain RV Park recently held its 11th annual cancer walk. They collected over $1,864, taking their grand total for the 11 years to over $17,500 for the National Cancer Institute.
First-place prizes went to three who tied: Hubert Honeycotte, Trudy Challborn and Bill King. Walkers tallied 121 miles in two hours for a total of 60.5 miles an hour.
