September 2008 Fun on the Fly
Yes, I know ... it's still hot outside.
But there are still a variety of family-oriented things to do in Yuma!
Does your child like to fish? Take them to the "Fishing on the Colorado" class from 7-10 a.m. Sept. 13. The program costs $12, is open to kids aged 8-13, and meets at the Riverside Outdoor Education Center, 50 N. Prison Hill Road. Call 373-5200 for more information.
Friday, Sept. 19, check out the Hispanic Heritage Festival on Main Street. This free event features dancing and folkloric music from 5-11 p.m.
Sept. 20 is the date for the fifth annual Come Out and Play Day. This free event features more than two dozen activities, from an art tent to a water slide. The pool and skate park will be open too. Come Out and Play Day will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Kennedy Park, Kennedy Lane north of 24th Street.
Two events of interest will be held on Sept. 27. The first is Yuma P.L.A.Y. Day, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. Desert Hills Drive. An expo-style event, P.L.A.Y. Day features local businesses, attractions and non-profit groups with lots of free activities for kids.
Later that night, you can check out the Outdoor Movie Night for the Dogs. This event is probably more appropriate for families with older kids accustomed to those of the canine persuasion. Dogs - and their owners - are invited to bring their lawn chairs to watch Scooby Doo at Desert Sun Stadium, Avenue A and 35th Street. This free film begins at 7:30 p.m. Donations are encouraged for Yuma's first dog park.
