ELLEN GARDNER got the idea to start a local drum circle after playing in this group in Tucson with her daughter.

Get rhythm: Yuman starting local drum circle

A new drumming group is being founded, and anyone who would like to share the experience of performing live with others is invited to join in, regardless of personal experience.

Ellen Gardner, a local woman, is founding the new group in Yuma which will gather together June 11 at 7 p.m. at the Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden, 2200 W. 28th St.

All ages and skill levels are welcome, but attendees will have to bring their own percussion instruments. The drum circle will allow people to play whatever rhythm they would like as long as they keep the tempo.

The event is free to the public.

Gardner said she got inspiration for creating a Yuma drum circle after playing with a similar group in Tucson. Her daughter lives there, and attends her own drumming group.

“This is something new we are trying to start," said Gardner. "This is an informal drumming session. The group mostly uses African hand drums, but any type of percussion instrument will do. We have gone with her a few times, and it is a fun and relaxing activity for people to do."

Gardner said one person will give a beat and others can then join in.

"It will be rhythmic. You start with certain rhythms and everybody adds to it. Everyone has a heart beat, so everybody has a rhythm even if they don’t know it. I know several people who are interested in something like this, and I hope many more will come and bring their talents and knowledge."

Gardner said playing the drums relieves stress and gives people a chance to bond while they learn how to play together.

"Drumming is relaxing because you can drum away and not think of anything else. This is something enjoyable I want to share with others."

She added, "everybody is going to have to work together, otherwise it will sound like popcorn. Even if we are loud, this is a good location because there are no houses nearby."
