Vendors sought for Crossroads Mission farmers market
Crossroads Mission is seeking vendors for their farmers market in Yuma this November.
Previously a longtime fundraiser for the Yuma Community Food Bank, Crossroads Mission Executive Director Myra Garlit said that the shelter will be taking on the endeavor this year.
"We’re very excited about it," she said. "We think it might be a really worthwhile fundraiser for us."
In order for it to be a successful fundraiser, however; Garlit said that they are asking vendors to contact them now a few months in advance. She said that vendors will be able to keep their profits from their sales, but they will pay Crossroads Mission for renting the space at the event.
Her goal is to have 85 percent produce and other food vendors with about 15 percent of vendors selling ancillary products.
"We’re really trying to make it a true farmer’s market as much as we can," she said.
Garlit shared that the fundraiser fits perfectly with Crossroads Mission's recent shift to more healthy eating.
"We’re kind of basic people here and what’s more basic than agriculture and growing your own food? We’ve tried to, in many ways, change the mission over the past few years and make the folks more health-conscious."
One of the ways they did that was by creating a community garden where they grow things like vegetables and herbs.
"I believe that there’s great therapy in the dirt and getting things to grow whether it’s produce or a flower," she said.
While they're hoping to keep the entire theme of the farmers market centered around agriculture, she said that other ancillary products being sold could also include crafts, art and woodmaking-type products.
"We’re pretty much open to any vendor that wants to come and participate."
Garlit concluded that the farmers market will be held downtown on Main Street on Tuesdays and at the Yuma Palms Regional Center on Saturdays from November through the month of March.
Interested vendors should contact Garlit at 941-3100 for more information.
