Corona, Ford big YC winners at Regionals
Yuma Catholic had a handful of athletes and both teams qualify for state at the 2A Regionals Saturday in Chandler.
Paul Corona stole the show for the Shamrocks by winning the pole vault with a height of 14 feet, 9 inches. The vault beat his previous best of 13 feet. Corona also took second in the triple jump (40 feet, 3 inches) and third in the long jump (19 feet, 10.25 inches).
Ed Harris took second in the 300 hurdles (40.24 seconds), third in the 110 hurdles (16) and third in the triple jump (40 feet, 1 inch).
Ernie Samaniego took third in the 300 hurdles (42.92) and was fourth in the 110 hurdles and the high jump.
Rod Ford won the 400-meter run (51.26), took second in the high jump (5 feet, 11 inches) and third in the 200 run (22.85).
The YC boys 1,600 relay team consisting of Ford, Samaniego, Austin Rodriguez and Cody Alexander set a regionals record, winning with a time of 3:30.
The 400 relay team took second (45.46) and the 3,200 relay team took third.
Elliot Cooley was a surprise qualifier in the discus, qualifying by distance despite taking fifth with a throw of 122 feet, one inch.
The YC boys team took second with a total of 127. Valley Christian won with a total of 185.
The YC girls finished third with a total of 82 points behind Valley Christian (255.5) and Northwest Christian (107).
Alexandra Rosado won the shot put (31 feet, 9 inches) and the discus (87 feet, 3 inches).
Beth Norton qualified with a fourth-place finish in the pole vault (6 feet, 7 inches).
Charyssa Greenwell took fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.74). Rachel Harman finished fourth in the 3,200 run and the 1,600 run.
The 400 relay team of Amy Ford, Melissa Zermeno, Jaclyn Hill and Rosado finished fourth (54.03). The 1,600 relay team of Haley Aivizian, Elizabeth Gump, Hill and Greenwell finished third (4:33.38). The 3,200 relay team of Jennifer Gump, Samantha Barczynski, Harman and Hill finished fourth (12:17.87).
