Area swimmers reach state finals
Emily Reh has another opportunity to redeem herself.
Reh qualified for the finals of the girls 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter freestyle in the preliminaries of the state swim meet Thursday at the Kino Aquatics Center in Mesa. Reh's 50 free was clocked at 24.55 seconds, good for eighth, and her 100 free was at 53.65, good for 11th.
Last year, Reh entered the 50 free prelims as the top seed and the 100 free in sixth, but she wound up placing fifth and eighth in the finals, respectively.
Other local swimmers in the state finals include Kofa's Jonathan Duran in the boys 50 free (22.09, ninth), Cibola's Andrew Russell-Cheung in the boys 100 breaststroke (1 minute, 2 seconds, 13th) and Jesse Kaba in the girls 100 breast (1:10.19, 15th).
The finals begin at noon Saturday.
