Yuma Catholic tops Buckeye
The Yuma Catholic football team headed to Buckeye to play an undefeated Division IV squad.
The Shamrocks came back home with a huge 37-24 win.
Senior running back Kody Hazlett rushed 28 times for 189 yards and two touchdowns — not to mention he had four receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Jagan Cleary went 13 of 19 for 163 and two touchdowns without any interceptions.
“We traveled a long way to pick a fight, we’re not going to lay down,” said Shamrock coach Rhett Stallworth.
The Shamrocks (4-1) opened up the game with a 85-yard kickoff return by senior Andy Determan for a touchdown and led the Hawks (4-1) 28-6 at halftime. Buckeye entered the game No. 7 in Arizona Interscholastic Association Power Points and was No. 3 in the Arizona Championship Series at Division IV.
“This shows we’re right on top of the heap,” Stallworth said about Division V, where the Shamrocks entered the game No. 6 in AIA Power Points.
Yuma Catholic returns to face Santa Cruz at home on Friday.
Brawley distances Raiders late
Cibola led by one in the fourth quarter but Brawley scored 21 unanswered points to win 33-13 on Friday.
The Raiders (3-2) took a 13-12 lead on a 32-yard field goal by Edgar Gastelum with 9:08 left to go in fourth quarter but Brawley came up with big plays on options and broke it open late.
Senior running back Jordan Mitchell rushed 30 times for 205 yards and had Cibola’s only touchdown on the night. Junior quarterback Lucky Arvizo Jr. went 7 for 13 for 55 yards.
“It was a pretty hard-fought game,” Cibola coach Lucky Arvizo Sr. said. “The guys fought to the end.”
Cibola travels to Corona del Sol on Friday.
Harvest Prep falls
The Harvest Prep football team picked up its first loss of the season on a 46-20 defeat to Madison Prep in Tempe.
The Eagles (3-1) were led on offense by junior running back Ruben Anaya with 82 rushing yards and scored all three touchdowns. On defense, Armando Moreno had a team-high nine tackles and Isaias Lucero had eight for the Eagles.
“They just shut down our runs,” coach Nathen Baker said. “Defensively we hung tough, but special teams put us in some tough situations with some short fields.”
Harvest Prep will host Southgate on Friday.
PC beats Antelope
Undefeated Phoenix Christian took care of Antelope 54-23 on Friday night.
Rams coach Dan Gardner could not be reached for stats and comment.
PREP VOLLEYBALL
San Luis edges Cibola
The San Luis volleyball team topped Cibola Thursday 25-20, 16-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-10.
