Part of La Mesa Care Center evacuated after Freon leak
A portion of La Mesa Care Center was evacuated by emergency personnel Thursday afternoon following a Freon leak.
No serious injuries were reported although three patients staying at the facility, located at 2470 South Arizona Ave., were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Regional Center as a precaution. Several facility workers were also evaluated on scene but not transported.
According to the Yuma Fire Department, emergency personnel were sent to the facility at about 3 p.m. after a smoke alarm activated. The first units on scene found a room filled with a light vapor haze, but no fire or smoke, as the surrounding wing of the care center was evacuated.
Investigators determined the vapor haze was caused by an air conditioning unit that had failed and began leaking Freon refrigerant. The a/c unit was removed and the room was ventilated to disperse the refrigerant.
Occupants were able to return to the evacuated area shortly before 4 p.m.
