Antelope, Yuma Catholic to meet in state semis
No. 5 seed Yuma Catholic moved into the semifinals of the 1A/2A/3A State Tournament with a 2-1 win against No. 4 Safford at the Benedict Sports Complex in Tempe.
The Shamrocks will face rival Antelope on Friday in the semis. The No. 9 Rams upset top-seeded Maricopa 3-1.
Joe Gandara scored both Shamrock goals in the 37th and 76nd minutes. He rebounded Cody Alexander's kick off the goalie back for the first score. The game-winner came off a free kick by Junior Evans on an assist from Jared Peach.
The game was tied at halftime.
"It was a brutal game, pretty physical," YC assistant coach Ralph Evans said. "The field was dead grass with all kinds of sand-covered holes. The ball was bouncing everywhere."
Friday's semifinal will be at 5 p.m. at Mesa-Mountain View High School. The winner will play in Saturday's championship the following day at Arizona State University.
