ON DECK: Interrupting football for speech

In the early stages of the highly anticipated football game between the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers, NBC decided to cut away from the game. They showed President Barack Obama deliver a speech at a ceremony honoring the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School last week.

And I was all right with it.

It wasn't like one team was lining up for a game-winning field goal and NBC switched. Besides, regardless of your stance on the President or gun control, the moment was important enough to hear what our leader had to say. This was a tragedy of unimaginable proportions and missing a few drives of a football game is far from the worst thing in the world.

I understand the idea that on a Sunday night, somebody just wants to watch football. However, some moments are bigger than sports and require a little bit of self-reflection.

But I can't imagine the decision to switch went over well in a sports bar.
