Matador baseball splits with San Diego City
The Arizona Western baseball team split its doubleheader Tuesday at San Diego City, winning 5-4 and losing 4-0 in a pair of seven-inning games.
Angel Sanchez and Dallas Hessler each had two hits and an RBI in the Game 1 win for the Matadors (8-5), who open conference plays noon Saturday at Tucson.
Brandon Anderson (1-0) pitched five innings, allowing eight hits and two runs for the win. Omar Celaya pitched the seventh for the save.
The Knights (1-3) got the tying run to third in the sixth and first in the seventh but no closer.
In Game 2, Richard Dutton (2-1) took the loss, allowing two runs in five innings. The game was called after seven innings due to darkness.
Mark Vasquez pitched a four-hit shutout, with no Matador getting past second base.
“I thought the team played well,” AWC coach Drew Keehn said. “We executed pretty well, but we just ran into a guy on the mound in the second game that was very good, and we were just a bit overmatched by him. We might have had a chance to come back but just ran out of sunlight.”
