Matador baseball sweeps, softball splits
The Arizona Western baseball team needed a timely hit by pitch to win the first game of a doubleheader 3-2 against GateWay at home on Saturday.
But in the second game, they put the game away in the first inning.
The Matadors scored 10 runs in the opening frame and completed the sweep with a 10-4 win.
In the two games, Dallas Hessler went a combined 5 for 8 with three doubles and 5 RBIs. Ryan Escobar hit a grand slam in the first inning of the second game.
In the first matchup, Omar Celaya threw three scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win for the Matadors, who improved to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in Arizona Community College Athletic Conference play.
With the game tied 2-2 in the ninth inning during the first game, the Matadors loaded the bases and Hector Valenzuela was hit by a pitch to secure the win.

Matadors split with Cougars
The Arizona Western softball team beat South Mountain 9-1 after falling 5-4 on Saturday in Phoenix.
Hayley Miller picked up the win for the Matadors in the second game. Miller (7-3) pitched five innings and allowed five hits. April Marquez and Madison Tracy each hit home runs in the win.
The split makes the Matadors 17-9 overall and 9-5 in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.
