Catron finishes second in scorecard playoff

Gila Ridge claimed the school's first Gila Valley Region title in any sport on Friday, topping host Lake Havasu by two strokes at the Course at London Bridge Golf Club.

Collin Catron of the Hawks finished with an 8-over-par 80, tying Havasu's Garrett Luzzi. A scorecard playoff worked in favor of Luzzi, who did better than Catron's bogey on No. 2.

"This was our goal all year long," Hawks coach David Schulz said. "This is a big deal for us. This is the first region title in school history."

Gila Ridge's Mason Lopez's 82 was good for third. Kofa (388) took third as a team with Cibola (391) fourth.

The Knights' girls team claimed the title, with Havasu's Taylor Byers winning the individual title. Kofa was 16 behind Havasu's 360, while Cibola shot a 408 and Gila Ridge a 411.
