Hawks down Criminals


Gila Ridge’s Victor Castro pitched four scoreless innings of relief as the Hawks defeated Yuma High 10-2 at home on Tuesday.


Castro relieved Steven Garcia, who threw the first three innings and gave up two runs, and scattered three hits over four innings of work while strking out three.


Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, the Hawks hammered home nine runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.


Hayato Johnson started the Hawks’ rally with a two-run double and ended the night 2-for-3. Lance McLaren went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.


Yuma (13-6 overall, 2-1 GVR) plays at Kofa today.

Yuma High routs Gila Ridge


The Criminal softball team used a late barrage of runs to earn a 13-3 victory at Gila Ridge on Tuesday.


Yuma High held a 4-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth before blowing the game open with six runs in the frame. Gila Ridge scored three in the bottom of the inning, but the Criminals responded with three more runs in the seventh to bring the game to its final margin.


Isabel Villalobos picked up the win for Yuma High, while Nikki Kelland was charged with the loss. Larissa Espinoza went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs for Yuma High, while teammates Brittney Ramos (2-for-5, three runs) and Marissa Madrigal (3-for-5 two RBIs) also chipped in.


PREP BOYS TENNIS


Cibola finishes perfect in GVR


The Cibola boys tennis team finished its perfect run through the Gila Valley Region, finishing up 10-0 after a doubleheader sweep at Lake Havasu.


The Raiders won both matches 7-2 and assured themselves a spot in the Class 5A-II Team Tennis State Tournament, which begins next week.


Albert Castro, Luis Franco, Brett Boyer, Blake Boyer and Sammy Ahmed each went 2-0 on the day in singles.


PREP GIRLS TENNIS


Cibola swept by Lake Havasu


The Cibola girls tennis team was swept in a doubleheader against Lake Havasu on Tuesday, losing both matches by a 5-4 margin.


In the first match, Cibola earned victories from No. 1 Ashreetha Murugesan (6-2, 5-7, 10-4), No. 3 Kassandra Rodriguez (6-0, 6-4) and No. 6 Shelby Chambless (7-5, 6-4). Stephanie Ramirez and Rodriguez also teamed up for an 8-4 victory in the No. 2 doubles tilt.


In the second match, No. 4 Amrutha Doniparthi (10-6), Leslie Cruz-Rivera (10-6) notched singles victores. Murugesan and Chambless also won the No. 1 doubles match 8-6 while Doniparthi and Cruz-Rivera won the no. 3 doubles tilt by an 8-4 margin.


San Luis tops Yuma High


The San Luis girls tennis team rolled to an 8-1 victory at Yuma High on Tuesday.


Sidewinder No. 1 Krystal Rodgriguez (2-6, 6-2, 10-3) won, as did No. 2 Cristina Piceno (6-0, 6-2) and No. 3 Auri Diaz (6-4, 6-0). For doubles, Piceno and Diaz teamed to win 8-6 at No. 1, while Rodriguez and Jennifer Curiel won 8-0 for No. 2.


Kofa tops Gila Ridge


Alice Fiddler was apart of two Gila Ridge wins, but it wasn’t enough as the Hawks fell 6-3 to Kofa on Tuesday.


Fiddler won 3-6, 6-4 and 10-8 at No. 6 singles, and joined with Lucy Fiddler for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Brianna Alvarez and Ashley Walker teamed for an 8-5 win at No. 2 singles.
