Lady Hawks fall to Raiders

The Gila Ridge girls basketball team lost its season opener hosting Cibola on Monday, 47-41.

Vivian Zavala led the Hawks with 16, while Brontee Simpson added 11 and Brooke Crist had 10 rebounds. Sarah Ray (14) and Lawanda Watson (12) reached double-digits for the Raiders in a non-region match.

Despite his team falling down by as much as 13, coach David Schultz was pleased with the way his Hawks played.

"We had a couple of lapses here and there, especially in the first and third quarters," he said. "It was one of those games that last year would have gotten away from us and we would've lost by 20, 25 points. I was really pleased with the way the girls fought back."
