Veterans do help those in need

This is in response to a recent letter questioning why vets don't help vets.

First of all, the American Legion AMVETS and VFW are constantly providing help and support. When traveling, a member is welcome at any post. If a visitor finds himself strapped for cash, the local post commander can help. Members also open their homes and hearts to their fellow vets in need.

Secondly, anybody can buy military clothing at a surplus store. Just because someone is panhandling in a field jacket and boonies, doesn't mean they are a vet. In perspective, about 1 million served in Vietnam, but about 3 million claim they have served.

It is unfortunate that these scammers present themselves as homeless vets, but they do.

Perhaps the letter writer should have asked the various organizations about their assistance programs before assuming he knew the truth.
